Accommodation in Norway can be surprisingly expensive, which makes choosing where to stay in Bergen and selecting the right hotel an important decision.

I’ve been lucky to visit Bergen a few times and recently returned to start the Hurtigruten Coastal Express. I’d already spent a lot of money booking this cruise and wanted to carefully consider my accommodation options before and after the voyage.

I ended up spending quite a bit of time researching the best areas to stay, which became the foundation for this post. I’d usually classify hotels as budget, mid-range or luxury. However, because accommodation in Bergen is relatively expensive, I’ve introduced an additional “upper mid-range” category to better reflect the hotels available.

Bergen is a compact and walkable city with many things to do. Most travellers stay in the City Centre (Sentrum) or Bryggen for convenience. There are also good options close to the Hurtigruten Terminal, the train station and Bergen Airport if you’re prioritising transport connections.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through where to stay in Bergen and share a selection of hotels to suit every budget.

Best Areas to Stay in Bergen

Sentrum (City Centre) – best for first-time visitors
Bryggen – best for historic atmosphere
Hurtigruten Terminal / Nøstet – best for cruise passengers
Train Station – best for transport connections
Bergen Airport – best for early flights

Hotels in Bergen are generally expensive compared to many other European cities and prices can vary significantly between winter and summer. The guide below shows typical nightly prices so you can choose the right hotel for your budget.

This is one of the most popular areas to stay thanks to its central location and easy access to sightseeing. For this reason it’s also one of the best areas to stay in Bergen for first-time visitors.
