If you’re planning a trip to Portugal, you’re probably wondering how many days do you need in Lisbon?

When planning my own trip, I found it surprisingly difficult to decide how many days to spend in Lisbon while still leaving enough time to see Sintra.

After spending three days in Lisbon myself, I found it was the ideal amount of time for a first visit. It gave me two days to see Lisbon’s highlights, historic neighbourhoods and Belém, plus a full day trip to visit Sintra

In this guide, I’ve broken down what you can realistically see in 1, 2, 3 or 4+ days to help you decide which trip length is right for your Lisbon itinerary.

The Best Trip Length for First Time Visitors

If it’s your first time visiting, I’d recommend spending 3 days in Lisbon. This gives you enough time to visit the main attractions, explore the neighbourhoods including Alfama and Belém, and take a day trip to Sintra.

1 Day in Lisbon

Best for: Cruise passengers or a stopover
You’ll have time for: Explore Lisbon’s historic centre including Baixa, Chiado and Alfama, and ride Tram 28
What you’ll miss: Many of Lisbon’s top attractions, Belém and day trips like Sintra

While one day isn’t enough to experience everything Lisbon has to offer, you can still see many of the city’s highlights if you’re short on time.

Many of Lisbon’s most famous neighbourhoods, including Baixa, Chiado and Alfama are close together, making it easy to see several of the city’s highlights in a day.

The easiest way to maximise your time is by joining a guided tour. Tuk Tuk tours are one of the most popular and a great way to get around Lisbon’s steep hills while covering more ground than you could on foot. I’d recommend this Private Guided Tuk-Tuk Tour.

If you’d prefer to explore the city independently, you can follow day 1 of my Lisbon itinerary. Spend the morning wandering through Baixa and Chiado, try a traditional bifana, visit São Jorge Castle, then explore the narrow streets and viewpoints of Alfama.

If one day is all you have, Lisbon is absolutely worth visiting but with so much to see and do, expect to leave wanting to come back.

2 Days in Lisbon

Best for: A weekend city break
You’ll have time for: Visit Lisbon’s main attractions and explore Belém
What you’ll miss: Day trip to Sintra

Two days is enough to see Lisbon’s main attractions, although you’ll need to keep a fairly fast pace. You’ll also have time to spend half a day exploring the historic neighbourhood of Belém.

To make the most of your time in the city, you can follow the first two days of my Lisbon itinerary. It follows a carefully planned route, helping you avoid unnecessary backtracking and maximise your time.

If you’re planning a weekend city break, I’d recommend spending 2 days in Lisbon. However, if you can extend your trip to 3 days, you’ll also have enough time to add a day trip to Sintra, one of Portugal’s most beautiful destinations.

3 Days in Lisbon

Best for: First time visitors
You’ll have time for: See the highlights and take a day trip to Sintra
What you’ll miss: Exploring at a slower pace and additional experiences

3 days in Lisbon is the perfect trip duration for first time visitors. It gives you enough time to spend two days exploring Lisbon’s main attractions and neighbourhoods, plus a full day discovering Sintra.

Although it might seem like a big commitment to dedicate one of your three days to Sintra, it’s absolutely worth it. Home to colourful palaces, fairytale castles, beautiful gardens and incredible hilltop views, it’s one of the best day trips you can take from Lisbon.

After spending 3 days in Lisbon myself, I created the exact itinerary I wish I’d had before visiting. It covers everything from Lisbon’s historic neighbourhoods to the perfect day trip to Sintra, helping you to make the most of each day of your trip.

4+ Days in Lisbon

Best for: Slower travel and day trips from Lisbon
You’ll have time for: Exploring Lisbon at a slower pace, taking day trips and enjoying additional experiences such as museums and food tours

If you have 4 or more days in Lisbon, you’ll be able to experience the city at a much more relaxed pace. Rather than rushing between attractions, you can have long lunches, enjoy the city’s best viewpoints and spend time inside Lisbon’s attractions rather than simply admiring them from the outside.

You’ll also have time to take day trips from Lisbon. Alongside Sintra, you can explore the seaside town of Cascais, and stand at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe.

With so many things to do in Lisbon, spending 4 or more days gives you the opportunity to explore beyond the highlights at a slower pace.
